Advice for Freshmen
by Caitlin Hill
Incoming freshmen may be a bit worried about what it means to be in high school. Riddled with anxiety about grades, friends, clubs, and college, starting high school can be a stressful experience. That’s why in this article, I’m going to be sharing some advice on how to handle those worries and allow you to focus on making memories.
Tip #1: Get Involved
Nottingham has many clubs, activities, sports teams, and events. Don’t be afraid to join in on things you’re interested in. Participate in school spirit weeks and go to games. There are many memories to be had here.
Tip #2: Don’t Procrastinate Work
The worst feeling is having a barely-started essay due soon. A good way to stay on top of your work is to get started early. If you have any free time in school, I recommend getting some assignments done then so you have less (or nothing) to do at home. During your lunch period, you could go to the library for a quiet space. Finding a study routine that works for you is also very important early on in your high school career. It allows you to get your work done easily and more productively.
Tip #3: Try New Things
High school is the perfect time to try new things and explore new interests–both in and out of school. This is especially good if you are unsure of what you would like to pursue in college or as a career.
Tip #4: Start Looking Ahead
Don’t worry, you’re still a freshman. You have four years ahead of you so there’s no need to worry about things like college applications and whatnot now. However, you should start to think about what you would like to do after high school. If you decide to go to college, this allows you to have more time to efficiently prepare and not go into the college application process blind. Looking to see what classes Nottingham has to offer and seeing what classes you would want to take in the future can also be beneficial. There are also things like freshman scholarships and contests you can apply for–all you have to do is look.
Being a freshman can be stressful, but remembering to stay on top of your work and letting yourself have fun will make it much easier. These four years will go by fast, so make the most of it. Welcome to Nottingham, Northstars!
