Interview: Girls Soccer (20-21)
by Raven Roberts
1. What was the focus/gameplan coming on the field and how did it help you succeed?
Fink: The focus was to keep the girls focused and for them to be mentally prepared to play Steinert. We needed everyone to work for the full 80 minutes and play with heart. We talked about playing for Gabi Girman because she recently broke her foot in one of our games. The girls focused all of their heart and energy towards playing for her and playing tough defense.
Gia: I just didn’t feel like getting blown out and crying on the field AGAIN, So I just worked the hardest I could and hoped my teammates did the same.
Emily: My focus was to not let them get one [goal] past me and if they got one in, not to let them get two in and that seemed to work
Amber: The game plan was to just work with what you have and make the best of it no matter the outcome
Brielle: Besides trying to win, I think the main focus was to put everything we've been working on, especially passing, together in a game. I think the reason for my success was through my team and how we were able to maintain the tie by working together.
2. Who would you name MVP this game/ who do you feel did the most work behind the scenes?
Fink: I would name Gia Girman MVP of this game because she stepped up big time for our team and for her sister. She played in a position that she doesn’t normally play in because it was the right thing to do for the team. Even from a defensive position, she still managed to put the ball in the back of the net which is pretty remarkable.
Gia: Emily Hubbard because she had like 400 saves
Emily: Brielle for stepping up and taking Gabi’s spot
Brielle: We all showed up that game, but if I were to name an MVP I would have to pick Nicole. When Gia was up top I could always count on her to help me in the back and save me when needed. She played hard and it didn't go unnoticed.
Amber: Our MVP is always our goalie (Emily Hubbard), she always is a big part of our game win or lose. I feel like all of us need a lot of work. Whether it’s with soccer skills or attitude on the field there’s a lot we can work on to improve.
3. What was something you guys did differently in this game than in previous seasons?
Fink: We finally put a full 80 minutes of soccer together and even the 20 minutes of overtime, so 100 minutes! We fought for every ball and for each other which as a coach, you can’t ask for anything else.
Emily: Worked the full 90 minutes and never gave up.
Gia: Yeah, what Emily said.
Brielle: Although I am pretty much new to varsity this year, I think something that was different this Steinart game vs prior years is that we banded together to come close to beating Steinart for once. We all truly wanted to win and you could tell by how we played and kept pushing. Though we didn't win, it was still a victory in our minds and I especially was proud of how we played that day.
Amber: I think we all just had to adjust with each other and made things work with what we had. We have players from all different levels of experience playing together at one team so we find each other’s strengths and weaknesses and use them to our advantage.
4. What makes you guys confident this season will be a successful one?
Fink: Our heart and dedication is what is going to make this season successful. The girls play hard, want to get better and show up everyday ready to do both.
Gia: Sometimes success means different things to people is different and to me it’s just growing as a player and that’s the most successful thing in my eyes.
Emily: The season is a successful one if we are playing the game each one of us loves and having fun. Success isn’t about wins of losses but it’s how you grow as a team and create bonds on and off the field. That’s a successful season
Brielle: I think what makes us confident is our heart. Coach always says it doesn't matter the score as long as you leave all you have on the field. I think that is what we are best at because we never give up and we keep pushing no matter what
Amber: All teams nationwide are going through the same struggle to connect with each other as a team so hopefully we just get it together before they do.
5. What do you think you still need to work on to make the best of this season?
Fink: I think we need to work on keeping the ball on the ground, playing to feet and we need to learn from our mistakes and move on. Lots of season left to play!
Gia: Communication, learning how to pass the ball, and not giving up even when we are down
Emily: I still need to work on not getting down on myself and not giving up on myself. What mistake does a lot to me but there's still plenty of time in the game to keep my head up and work hard.
Brielle: I think communication is something we still need to work on. I especially struggle with that, but when we were able to communicate on the field we played much better as a team, and a much better game as a whole
Amber: I think getting to know each other as a team can really help us improve , like we all know each other in soccer but outside of soccer we don’t really mix.
Fink: The focus was to keep the girls focused and for them to be mentally prepared to play Steinert. We needed everyone to work for the full 80 minutes and play with heart.
