The Best Pet of Nottingham is ...
Bruce Wayne!
Bruce Wayne outlasted 96 other pets and was voted the "Best Pet of Nottingham!" Bruce Wayne (Lhasa Apso) is the owner of English teacher Ms. Tiffany Wilkes. In a closer than you think championship contest, Bruce Wayne defeated Master Oogway (Greek Tortoise) who is owned by senior Nick Houghton.
The Star Status March Madness Pet Photo Contest was so popular, it had to go into April. Bruce Wayne edged out Principal Frank Ragazzo's dog Lola and Master Oogway defeated English teacher Ms. Lindsay Hawley's dog Jamison in the semifinals.
We look forward to next year's March Madness Pet Photo Contest and we thank you and all of these fabulous pets for participating.

The Championship!
What do you like best about your pet?
I like Master Oogway for his slow and steady demeanor. And also his sense of style - no silly, stupid dog tags for him! He is too masculine for that. Why did you choose that name for your pet? His name was chosen as a homage to the character from the classic film Kung Fu Panda. Since he is a Greek Tortoise, one name option that was not selected was "The Greek Freak." Favorite memory? My favorite memory with Master Oogway is when he spends time with his creep (tortoise name for young brood - he has three siblings) and munches on expensive, organic kale. And then there was that time when he did a face plant in his water bowl. Worst thing he ever did? The worst thing he ever did was to deficate in his water bowl (not the same time as above), but no big deal, all tortoises do that on occasion! The water helps with constipation. Sometimes he drinks water and urinates at the same time. Favorite game to play? Mater Oogway's favorite game to play is hide and seek. When you try to touch him, he hides in his carapace and plastron! He's very good too. "Can't see me! Can't see me! I'm not here! I'm not here!" Any tricks? Aside from pooping in his water bowl, the only trick he knows so far is to do neck extensions when feeding. Were you confident that your pet would do so well in this contest? I am very surprised and humbled by his success. We are just taking it slow and steady, one match at a time. Hope to see you at the finish line! |
What do you like best about your pet?
Evertything! Bruce is smart, handsome, funny, and he divides his time evenly between people. He also looks fantastic in a bow tie. Why did you choose that name for your pet? Not all heroes wear capes. Favorite memory? Bruce landed his dream role as "Toto" in Nottingham's production of The Wiz in 2015. Another great memory is Bruce with a mohawk. Worst thing he ever did? Master Wayne decided to pull off Santa's beard while taking a picture with him. It's a funny thing about secret identities ... Favorite game to play? Bruce plays his own version of "tag." When called to come inside, Bruce sometimes wants to be chased around the yard in all kinds of weather. Any tricks? Master Bruce plays with toys that are appropriate for the season. For example, in October Bruce will play with the bat and the pumpkin. Also, Mr. Wayne somehow hides his food under his water bowl without spilling a drop! Of course he can also sit, give his paw, and kiss you on command. He's outstanding! Were you confident that your pet would do so well in this contest? No, this is such an intense competition and there are so many adorable pets of all kinds. Bruce is grateful to be amongst such a great group of animals. |
The Final Four!

JamisonWhat do you like best about your pet?
He is the sweetest and most loving dog! He is the best at giving kisses and performing all his tricks for treats. Why did you choose that name for your pet? We wanted a strong name and knew of another dog who had the same name. We knew it was a perfect fit for him once we got him home. Favorite memory? The day Jamison was brought home. He completed our family that day. Worst thing he ever did? Really, nothing. He is a very good boy! Favorite game to play? Jamison's favorite game to play is hide and seek. He has not mastered the art of hiding, but takes seeking very seriously. Once he finds you, he barks to let you know that he has found you. Any tricks? Jamison can do anything. His best trick is saying 'Rob' (his brother's name) and also laying his blanket out on the floor before he eats his bones. Were you confident that your pet would do so well in this contest? I was without a doubt extremely confident in Jamison. He is very photogenic on top of being cute, so I knew everyone would see that as well. |
LolaWhat do you like best about your pet? Her soft velvety ears and the fact that she is a protector of our home. Why did you choose that name for your pet? We were all in the car with her disagreeing on different name choices for her when we drove past a restaurant with a lit up sign on the front that said, “LOLA’s”. Immediately, we all agreed that LOLA was the name. Favorite memory? Surprising the kids with her when we brought her home for the first time on April Fool's Day by playing an April Fool's joke on them in which they were told they would not be getting the dog they wanted (which was LOLA) before we revealed her presence in a cage covered by a blanket in the corner of our den. Worst thing she ever did? She escaped from the backyard, ran through the neighborhood chasing a squirrel. She finally found her way to a neighbor’s screened in back porch, which was 4 houses down from ours, and somehow opened the door and went in. The neighbor called us to say that Lola was on her couch chewing on her slipper! Favorite game to play? She loves to fetch the Frisbee, ball or toy…and then not bring it back until you open the door to go inside and pretend you are done playing with her. Any tricks? She is able to catch any type of food thrown at her before it hits the ground no matter how high or hard you throw it…also, she sometimes says “HELLO”…at least we think she does! Were you confident that your pet would do so well in this contest? The kids were always confident in LOLA’s ability to make it to the finals. Once I saw all of the incredible pets in this contest, I thought it would be a difficult road to the FINAL Four! |

March Madness Preview: Pet photo slide show
The results are in from Round 1 and Round 2 of the Star Status March Madness Pet Photo Contest! Winning pets move on to the Sweet Sixteen.
Dogs ruled the first round; 45 of the 51 pets who qualified for the second round were dogs. Daisy and Charlie had the best margin of victory, with each dog receiving 80.4% of the votes. Mac, Presley, Bubu, Cosmo, and Bronx all received over 70% of the votes in their respective matchups. Two (K)(C)hloes advanced, America and Liberty were voted out. The tortoise beat the hare (again). Bert was eliminated, but Ernie survived. Carson Wentz defeated Nick Foles, even though Nick Foles won the Eagles a Super Bowl. Good luck with Carson Wentz, Eagles fans.
Only two cats advanced to Round 2, along with two fish, one bird, and one tortoise. One unscrupulous individual knowingly submitted a "fake pet" for the Pet Photo Contest. The "fake pet" was immediately disqualified by the selection committee and the submitter of the "fake pet" is banned from all future Star Status contests, whether they be pet or human contests.
Round 2 voting will take place from 3:00 p.m. on March 16th through March 19th. There were two near ties in the matchups from Round 1. All four pets in the two ties (49%+) advanced on to the second round. For Round 2, the winners of each "triple pet" matchup will advance to the Sweet Sixteen for another series of voting. In the Sweet Sixteen, each matchup will consist of FOUR pets per question.

All Nottingham High School students and staff members were encouraged to enter the Star Status March Madness Pet Photo Contest. Northstars submitted photos of their pets to be judged in an online voting contest. The deadline to enter the contest was Friday, March 9, 2018.
Pet photos were sent via direct message to the NHSVideo Twitter account using the hashtag #StarStatusPets2018 emailed. The pet voting matchups were set and the online voting contest on who had the "Best Pet" commenced. The winners of the first round moved on to round two, and new match ups were created. Round 2 featured matchups with three pets per question.
Eventually one pet will be crowned the "Best Pet of Nottingham!"
Contestants were determined by a committee of super awesome people with great judgement. The qualification committee reserves the right to reject any photos from being considered that we believe to be feigned or stolen content. No "fake pets" please. See photos above for examples of "fake pets."
The match ups are now complete: cat vs. dog, cat vs. bird, tortoise vs. hare, dog vs. fish, Carson Wentz vs. Nick Foles, and schnauzer vs. schnauzer. Who will win the inaugural (there's not such thing as "first annual") Star Status March Madness Pet Photo Contest? We don't know, but it sure sounds exciting.
Round 1 features 97 fantastic pets in a head-to-head voting contest. The winner of each of the first round matchups moved on to Round 2, where things got tougher as three pets vied for the matchup victory. After Round 2, we are into the Sweet Sixteen, but it didn't get any easier for our canine, feline, and other pet friends. There will be four pets in each matchup, with the winners making the Final Four. The Final Four matchups will return to the head-to-head voting contest, with the winning pet taking home the coveted title of "Best Pet at Nottingham."
