Paul Laurence Dunbar High School was established in 1870 as the Preparatory High School for Colored Youth with 45 students and one teacher, Emma J. Hutchins that provided secondary education to the city’s African American children after integration of schools failed. The school’s curriculum was very ambitious and prepared students for college and university enrollment. It was the first public high school for non-white students in Washington, D.C. remarkably successful. In the segregation era, the school had a high rate of college admission for graduates, with about two thirds of each graduating class continuing their education at a college or university.

Charles R. Drew, a renowned physician and the first African American surgeon examiner of the American Board of Surgery, revolutionized medicine by creating a system that allowed the immediate and safe transfusion of blood plasma. Born on June 3, 1904 in Washington, D.C., to Richard T. Drew and Nora Burrell, Drew grew up in the city attending Dunbar High School, excelling in academics and athletics. He earned an athletic scholarship to Amherst College in Massachusetts.

Congratulations to the following students that competed in the 23rd Annual High School Consumer Bowl Competition that was held at the Stone Terrace in Hamilton this past Friday: Gabe Samolchuk, Team Captain; Cat Sopko; Jennifer Schulz; Ethan Pizarro; Magdely Diaz de Leon. The Consumer Bowl is an educational competition that tests students’ knowledge of consumer in a game format. Good job to all students for their efforts in preparing for this event!

Congratulations to the Nottingham High School Jazz Band on their outstanding performance at the West Jazz Fest earning 4th place out of 10 bands! Donnie Neuls and Henry Miles took home outstanding musician awards and Joshua Rivera won one of the night’s top 4 soloist awards. The group also won the Esprit De Corps award. Go …. Stars!

Thomas L. Jennings was the first black man to receive a patent. The patent was awarded on March 3, 1821 for his discovery of a process called dry-scouring which was the forerunner of today’s modern dry cleaning. In his early 20s, he became a tailor, but then opened a dry cleaning business in the city. The patent he developed generated considerable controversy during this time period. Slaves, at this time, could not patent their own inventions. However, since Jennings was born free in 1791 in New York City, he was able to gain exclusive rights to his invention and profit from it.

Louis Akpadago won the gold medal in the 55 Meters on Saturday to become the top sprinter in New Jersey. Louis tied the meet record of 6.38 seconds and then tied it again in the finals. Also medaling were: Alix Oge won bronze in the 55 Meter Hurdles; Dana Ridley won bronze in the 200 Meters; Shamali Whittle placed 7th in the 200 Meters and 8th in the 55 Hurdles as a freshmen. The Relay Team of Jalen Corbin, Eric Patrone, Kernley Charles and Dana Ridley placed 17th overall. Go… Stars!

Congratulations to Jerry Andaluz who was the first wrestler in Nottingham history to compete in a region final. He will be wrestling in the State Championships in Atlantic City later this week. This is the second year in a row that Jerry has qualified for the State Championships.

Jane Bolin was the first black woman to graduate from Yale Law School, the first to join the New York City Bar Association and the first to join the New York City Law Department. She became the first black woman to serve as a judge in the United States when she was sworn into the bench of the New York Domestic Relations Court in 1939.

The son of Asa and Ruth Sheffey who named him Asa Bundy at birth, poet Robert Hayden was born in Detroit, Michigan and reared in “Paradise Valley”, an inner city ghetto. Adoptive parents, William and Sue Ellen Westerfield Hayden, gave him the name by which he is now known. A graduate of Detroit City College, Hayden earned a M.A. degree in English from the University of Michigan, where on two occasions, 1938 and 1942, he received the Avery Hopkins awards for poetry. In 1966, Hayden was awarded the grand prize for poetry at the First World Festival of Negro Arts in Dakar, Senegal. In 1976, he became the first African American to be appointed Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress or Poet Laureate.

Joseph Rainey was the first African American elected to the United States House of Representatives and took his seat. His parents had been slaves, but his father purchased his family’s freedom. He moved to Charleston, South Carolina in 1846. In May, 1874 he became the first African American Representative to preside over a House session.
