Small Steps to Saving Earth
by Caitlin Hill
Earth Day 2021 is on April 22nd, which means it’s time for my annual rewatch of Pixar’s WALL-E.
The environment is a massive talking point these days, and for good reason. After all, we do live on this planet. The increase of industry and transportation has had disastrous effects on the environment, and we can only hope that we can reverse most of the damage done.
There are a lot of efforts that you could be doing, small daily no-brainers that could help improve the world you walk on.
Some of the obvious: turn off lights when leaving the room, unplug devices when you’re not using them, and reducing water consumption. But there are other things you can do as well.
There are tons of volunteering opportunities, you just have to look for them. If there aren’t any, you can always pick up trash on your walks.
Shopping second-hand is also a huge way you can help. You can visit thrift stores or use an online service like eBay. Second-hand items are also typically cheaper.
Recycling is a crucial part of the process. You can repurpose items in a variety of ways and it helps to conserve resources and grants landfill space.
What can you recycle?
Paper, cardboard, and some plastic products. Glass bottles and jars, metal containers, and much more.
Sustainability has become a lifestyle for some people, choosing to use absolutely no non-reusable plastic products and throw out next-to-nothing in the trash. While you might not fully commit to a zero-waste lifestyle, you can always take tips from it. Instead of using plastic bags, use reusable ones. Instead of using paper plates use actual plates. Don’t use straws. Use a refillable water bottle.
Climate change isn’t going to magically disappear by doing this, but adopting some of these methods could help to balance it. It’s important to educate yourself on topics like these because it doesn’t affect only one person, it affects everyone, future generations alike. Try to make a better today for a better tomorrow.
