Club Spotlight | Medical Careers Club
by Alexis Lashley and Theresa Revolus
The Medical Careers Club is one of Nottingham High School’s newest and most promising clubs. It was created last year by student, Anjali Patel, who was inspired by her own aspirations of venturing into the medical field once she graduated. Seeing how choosing such a career path could often be intimidating and confusing (so much so many students do not know where to begin), she figured out a way to “provide [students] with medical knowledge and also help them with their future plans.” Anjali also wanted to give back to her community, believing that “it is more important now than ever to do good.” She explained that her “passion for the medical field and [her] passion for doing good formed the Medical Club.”
A typical meeting of Med Club could be anything from discussing relevant and pressing medical conditions and learning about what a specific career may involve to hearing the insightful testimonies of experienced medical professionals. Speakers range from nurses to dentists who provide students with exclusive knowledge on their careers. Med Club also provides an array of volunteer opportunities, the most recent being at Genesis healthcare, a nursing home. There, as a representative of Genesis healthcare described, “the students have the opportunity to befriend a lonely old woman, read to an old man who has lost his sight, or even allow a woman with amnesia to call you her granddaughter.” The experience helps participants learn to put others before themselves, a quality that is a necessity for anyone interested in the medical field. There are also a variety of fun trips, including one to the Mutter Museum on January 11th. The club is planning another trip to the Body Exhibit Museum in the spring. Club members hope to start raising money for donations to charities that research illnesses and diseases.
If you wish to join the Medical Careers Club, it is not limited to aspiring doctors. It offers assistance in every medical field imaginable, from future pharmacists to paramedics, and even therapists. By joining Med Club, it shows potential colleges that you are serious about your ambitions. Even those who are unsure of what career path they will take can join as longtime member, Maya Gordon, did. Maya joined Med Club “to broaden [her] horizons and explore different careers.” Others join to give back to the community with the vast amount of volunteer opportunities available. Many also join to form new connections and embrace the enriching sense of community.
If you are interested in joining the Medical Careers Club, meetings take place in room S106 and are available both before and after school. If you would like to know when the next meeting is, please speak to Anjali Patel, Mr. Shulman (the advisor of Med Club), or listen for it on the morning announcements. The members of the Medical Careers Club encourage anyone who's interested to ask questions.
