Nottingham High School’s Winter Spirit Week was another huge success with wacky theme days, a Pep Rally, and the always popular Powder Puff cheerleaders routine. Students showed their school spirit dressing up on Onesies Monday, Turn Around Tuesday, Seasons Day Wednesday, Class Color Thursday, and lastly Ugly Sweater Friday. Northstar pride was shinning bright all week!
During Thursday's Pep Rally, the Winter sports varsity athletes were recognized. Senior male students continued the Northstar traditional Powder Puff cheerleader dance routine, dancing to holiday and popular songs. The wrestling team led by Coach Jason Marasco demonstrated wrestling moves and techniques.
Star Status recently conducted an interview with Student Government advisor Mrs. Christina Hogan, among with several Student Government officers like Andrea Uriostegui and Manny Magbene about the Winter Spirit Week and how more students can get involved.
Star Status: Spirit weeks at Nottingham are always highlights of the school year. Why do you think students enjoy participating in spirit days?
Mrs. Christina Hogan (Student Government Advisor): I think that spirit weeks are a break in the monotony of school. It gives everyone a chance to do something fun and express themselves in a way they normally wouldn’t.
Andrea Uriostegui: Spirit week gives students a chance to really show their creativity. It’s a week where students can take a break from all the stress and have fun.
What were your favorite memories from Winter Spirit Week 2019?
Mrs. Hogan: I always enjoy seeing the creativity of the students on each spirit day. The pep rally was probably my favorite memory. Having the entire school together in the gym created a sense of unity. The powerpuff boys, step team, and cheerleaders were very entertaining.
Andrea: My favorite memory was watching everyone so excited to take pictures. They posed like there was no tomorrow, proud to have school spirit. Those are the best types of students, the ones that are proud to be Northstars - no matter how foolish they may look!
Manny: Onesie day because it was fun and I felt so comfortable and warm.
Why is school spirit important to the students and staff of Nottingham High School?
For me, school spirit is an expression of pride in the school. When students and staff take pride in the school we are more willing to treat each other with respect, respect the building, and see things in a more positive light.
How are spirit week days selected?
Mrs. Hogan: The student government officers and advisors meet to discuss potential spirit days. The advisors bring recommendations from the staff, and the officers bring recommendations from the students. Once we agree on the days, we take them to Mr. Ragazzo for approval.
What’s the hardest part about coming up with ideas for the days?
Mrs. Hogan: Pleasing everyone!!! Believe it or not, there is a lot of conversation about the spirit days. Unfortunately, sometimes there are circumstances that are not known to us which cause a spirit day to be denied. We try to come up with days that are fun and appropriate for the school as a whole.
A majority of students participate in Spirit Week activities. Do you have any idea why a student would NOT participate in a Spirit Week?
Andrea: Some students are shy and not comfortable breaking out of their shell. They don’t want to look foolish, but they don’t understand that that’s the point. It’s supposed to look dumb and funny, it eases the stress of many high school students.
Manny: Some students do not participate in spirit week because they don’t have school spirit or they just do not care about anything.
How would you get more of your peers to participate in Spirit Week activities?Andrea: I would advertise is more, show students that it’s fun and a way to let loose.
Manny: Select theme days they they can do and will enjoy doing.
